It's never too cold for gelato!

Traveling to Italy at any time of the year is an excellent time to go! Typically summer is very warm and for some folks its downright hot not to mention the most expensive.  Families with children can summer vacation so it’s definitely the most crowded. Spring and early fall are what’s known as the shoulder seasons. The weather is quite comfortable for the many out door activities and prices become more affordable.
So, lets talk about late fall and winter when a visit to Italy is not only much more affordable but filled with even more terrific seasonal events. The locals get a break as the tourist crowds begin to dwindle and the evening passeggiata (evening stroll) can linger a little longer. The weather is becoming a little cooler up north. The central area is changing into muted green and brown fall colors with milder temperatures. And as we travel down to the toe and heel of the country we end up in the still quite warm sunshine of the southern regions.
For us it means all of the above and much more. It's the perfect time to take advantage of the off season prices. (Although prices will peek just before Christmas and through New Years.) Museum and Vatican visits are not shoulder to shoulder crowded and best of all it means a more relaxed pace to savor your experience and live in the moment.
A bevy of wonderful activities begin and Italy enjoys the fruits of its harvest. Low season food markets, chocolate, wine and cheese festivals and of course the Truffle hunt begins! The market stalls and shops open up for tastings. Olive oil, chestnuts, even Torrone hold their own festa. We can supply you with a list of festivals that take place throughout Italy year round.
Imagine being on a Truffle hunt where you will meet a trifolaio (truffle hunter) and his trained hound . After your search is over you’ll then go on to a lunch prepared with your precious find!  Believe me it will be an awesome experience and great instagram post! Another great experience in the fall , on a particularly overcast day in Venice, we took a food and wine walking tour. Guided through outdoor Fish and Vegetable markets with a handful of friends, in between stopping in the cicchetti bars for a tasty bite and a glass of wine. At the end of that tour we didn’t even notice the chill in air!
Italy is also home to 24 National Parks that are heaven to bikers and trekkers. Hiking or riding through the castagna (chestnut) countryside is a sight and smell sensory not to be missed.  It’s a foodies’ paradise this time of year no matter which activity you choose.
The fall and winter are filled with a multitude of cultural events that are indoors such as the thriving opera scene, musical concerts, and the ballet. Some the most famous opera houses are in Italy. Think La Scala in Milan and Teatro La Fenice in Venice just to name a few of the many brilliant architectural masterpieces. You can confidently book your preferred performances directly through us online. If you prefer a little more VIP service a pre or post guided tour of some of these magnificent facilities can be added as well.
As the days get shorter and closer to the holiday season the Christmas markets known as Mercatini di Natale begin.  Some situated along medieval walls, some located in the city centers' beautiful  piazza all decorated with festive colors and lights. Towns celebrate with spectacular outdoor stalls filled with generational artisans’ local crafts. Hand carved wooden decorations, pottery, delicate sweet treats and most famously the traditional presepe (nativity scenes) Italians so love.  Buon Natale !
January and February means SALDI (sale)I!!!   You will witness Saldi  in storefront windows through out Italy beginning in January. Italians are known for their bella figura  (philosophy of style) so locals anticipate these best buys of the season and hit the ground running thus it is not for the meek!. Typically the sales last through February or until the goods run out so first come and first served will score the best deals. So, my shopaholic friends, this is the best time all the way around to enjoy Italy at its best prices!
Last but certainly not least the ultimate party..........Carnevale! The transition between the end of winter and the beginning of spring. The most famous of all takes place in Venice where the city becomes a mysterious place reminiscent of a decadent past.  All of Italy, every town, down to the smallest, has its own Carnevale atmosphere.  Everyone celebrates in the parades, whether its for two weeks or for a few days the masks and beautiful costumes make stride throughout the streets and the parties before Lent unfold!

And remember although it's winter it’s never to cold for Gelato! It’s never too cold for gelato!
